Adaptations to Protect Physical Infrastructure in a Changing Climate

The Security and Sustainability Forum launched its Adaptation and National Security Webinar Series earlier this year. The webinars, designed as a complimentary 5-part series, seek to assist practitioners from government, industry and academia to better understand and promote effective measures to adapt to the complexities of a changing climate.

The series continues on September 28 with Session 3 – Adaptations to Protect Physical Infrastructure in a Changing Climate – moderated by Lynn Scarlett, Former Department of Interior Deputy Secretary. Her panel will include:

RFF Seminar – "Managing Extreme Events in our Rivers and Coastal Areas: Reflections on the Dutch Approach"

In the Netherlands, water management is a daily activity. Without dikes and coastal dunes, close to two-thirds of the country would be under water. Building on centuries of water management, the Netherlands has recently adopted a policy of "Room for the Rivers" as part of a new Delta Program to improve flood risk management in the face of a changing climate. What have the Dutch learned from their long history in managing water and their new flood policies? Can their experience offer any lessons for the United States?

During this breakfast seminar, Wim Kuijken, the Netherlands’ Delta Commissioner, will offer remarks on what his country has learned about floodplain and flood risk management and discuss new policies his country is adopting. Other panelists will provide commentary on the context of the issues in the United States, U.S. experiences with flood risk management, and emerging policy options going forward.

This month’s EPG luncheon will feature a presentation and discussion about how non-profit organizations, governments and communities are collaborating to deliver a new model of environmental restoration in the Colorado River Delta.

First Biennial Illinois RiverWatch Symposium

The first Biennial RiverWatch Symposium will be held on October 4 in Peoria, Illinois. The event will highlight the progress of the RiverWatch program including over 15 years of citizen scientist research being made available to the public for the first time. The RiverWatch Symposium is hosted and sponsored by the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center and the Governor’s Conference on the Management of the Illinois River System.

The Center for Environmental Innovation and Leadership (CEIL) recently released a copy of its Green Government Podcast Episode 21: A Focus on Water with G. Tracy Mehan. This podcast focused on water, wastewater and the role of water in green infrastructure and urban planning with Tracy Mehan of the Cadmus Group.

Mr. Mehan has been involved in the regulation of wastewater and drinking water infrastructure for decades. He currently leads the Cadmus Group in advising clients on water-related issues, including the Safe Water Drinking Act and Clean Water Act. Previously, he served as Assistant Administrator for Water at the U.S. EPA.
